I have a Jack Russell. Til recently we lived in a house with a nice fence. He kept the squirrels away but never killed anything. We now have no fence so I walk him in a nearby park. I made the mistake of letting him off leash ONCE! He promptly jumped in the bushes and caught and killed a rabbit. Understand, he is not a mean dog. As jack Russels go he is very docile and a good lap dog. He even pals around with our cat. But when the prey drive kicks in, he is focused on nothing else.

I think they would make a good Rabbit dog. You need to find someone that have Rabbit Beagles, they short like the Jack Russel and he should be able to keep up. Large Hounds would run off and leave him/her and it get lost. This the best way to Teach your dog. Running with experienced Beagles your dog catch on fairly quick to the Game. You may want to pop some Firecrackers around him/her to get the dog not afraid of guns. Good Luck!

Yes, I have one, and he will chase rabbits, ground hogs, squirrels, birds ,you name it. Fish from a small stream and yes these critters are dead time hes done with it.My Jack Russel also loves to dig holes or go into holes and pull whatever out. The best training for him to do this is when hes young, start him out by putting him near a hole in the ground and point to the hole and say, what is that, get it boy, show him how to dig it.

If you want a Jack Russell to hunt rabbits, you need to train them when they are pups, really young. They wouldn't hunt them, they would find their digging hole, and make them run out.

"Can" they? Of course, but hounds(beagles,dachs.,etc.) are BETTER!! JRT are meant to be"go-to-ground" hunter/workers. Uh,that's what "TERRIER" means!

Most JRT people HATE for their dogs to run bunny. That's NOT their job. It's TRASH & most break their dogs OFF rabbit.

Some LIKE it...some even train as squirrledogs...but TRUE TERRIER WORK is underground, after vermin-fox,coon,possum,'chuck,badger,etc.

They don't hunt rabbits. People do. JR's sniff them out of their holes.
