He was a jew and the jews didn't ban slavery. he did however believe in the year of jubilee when the owners would release their slaves and he also believed in treating them ethically.

He was in Israel where the slaves were freed every seven years and on the jubilee year as well instead of for a lifetime like the rest of the world. Most people became slaves in Israel to pay off debt. It was a business arrangement and they couldn't work on the sabbath and had other rights.

It is probably the same reason he didn't make a woman one of his deciples. No one really knows the answer to that question except to say it would have been too much controversy for his purpose. He had a bigger and better problem on his hands and that was to teach love and understanding. He left it up to us to decide what was right and wrong.
