My father was in the car business for 10 years at one of those "Autoplex's". So, from what I have learned from him, I will try to pass on to you. First, let's look at price; The suggested RETAIL price on any car is the STICKER or KELLY BLUE BOOK, now this is the price that is considered the ASKING price or price tag on a car. Next, is the invoice or wholesale price, both new and used cars have a wholesale price, it's just the terms that might be used. And lastly, you have the actual cost of the vehicle, on new cars, the invoice minus dealer holdback or factory to dealer incentives and such equals the actual cost on the car. Used vehicles depend on whether the car was traded for and how much the trade manager appraised the vehicle for, or how much the vehicle actually costs at a dealer auction. Now, a quick way to think of this is below:

Retail Price $20,000.00
Invoice $17,000.00
Dealer Holdback $ 1,500.00
Factory Incentive $ 500.00

Actual Cost $15,0000.00

This is an example of what a NEW car would look like if you could lay out all the figures. Now, you wanted to know how to get the best deal. Okay, first, what is your credit report like? If your credit history isn't so good than you will not quailify for the best rates. This can affect your monthly payments by as much as $80.00 a month or as little as $5.00 a month. Keep this in mind when you negotiate. Okay, you have done a budget as to how much you can afford each month for car payment and insurance. Let's say that you can afford a $350.00 a month car payment. Now $350.00 over 60 month auto loan will get you $18,500 purchase price at 5.5% annual percentage rate. However, if your APR is 2.5% than you would have a monthly payment of $330.00. So, get pre-approved for your auto loan before you go to buy, if the dealership can finance you there at the same rate, great, if not, getting a check from that lending institution the next day and getting the car is no big deal. Anyway, you are now pre-approved for an auto loan and know how much you can borrow. Don't let on how much you are willing to spend each month or subtract $50.00 from that amount ($350.00 - $50.00 = $300.00) and let the dealer work his way as close to the lower amount as possible. You should end up with a fair deal for yourself in the end.

Unfortunatley, gender can be a factor. I am an exception however. I went down to the car lot by myself with my mind made up and I was extremely confident. I got a great deal and even my boyfriend was surprised. I would wait until the dealership has good deals going on and I would go to www.kbb.com and look at the MSRP of the vehicle. Take the print-out with you and bargain. LOL compare prices and pin the dealerships against one-another, they may hate you for it, but hey you will love the great deal on your car. OR better yet....do it online. I hear they give great deals if you don't go down there in person because it's easier to say "No" to a crappy deal because they can't sucker you in to it. Hope I helped!

Intelligence matters. The salesman knows within minutes how much he can take you for. Don't blame him, it's his job.
Research your vehicle. Know the MSRP and dealer invoice. Make him understand you only pay less than MSRP and will go to a different dealer if he can't help you. DO NOT fall for the 'how much can you afford each month' trap.
It's always better if you have financing ready through your bank or credit union so you can just deal with the purchase price instead of clouding the deal with monthly payments.

1. Take a man with you
2. Stick with your price
3. Don't jump at the 1st card that you see just because you look cute in it.
4. Read up on the type of car that you want before you go to the dealership

I have bought two cars through carsdirect.com and think they are great. Their price is the lowest I have found. But you have to know exactly what you want.
