recumbent bike: more comfort, better for your spine and posture.
the other kind (cause they're both stationary anyway): it might help you burn more calories since you are still using the other muscles to keep you upright.
I personally like recumbent bikes better. The extra comfort helps me ride more and eventually offsets whatever extra calorie-burn benefit of that other kind of stationary bike.

A recumbent exercise bike takes the stress off your entire lower body, back, legs, knees. You can exercise on it longer than you can a regular upright exercise bike because of that comfort.
The only con I see to owning a recumbent bike is the space that it takes up compared to the size of a regular upright exercise bike.
I use a recumbent exercise bike for a 5 mile warm up before getting on the treadmill for 1 mile due to knee & joint problems.

There is less stress/shock to your body (knees, feet, joints, etc.) when using a recumbent exercise bike. It is very useful for people like me who have petela femoral syndromes or just an injury that they do not want to aggrevate.
I think the only con is that you don't get as much as a workout from it. There is (usually) no arm movement and you do not need to use your stomach muscles to sit you upright... although the angle does make you utilize those muscles.
So, unless you have an injury or are suceptible to one, it is more a question of personal preference.

The downside is that you have to be a contortionist to get on and off a recumbent bike. They are not at all popular at the Gym.
