The Thoroughbred is a finer boned breed, more elongated, more elegant (I think) and is used predominantly in the Hunter/Jumper industry. In horse racing, they run a mile.

The Quarter Horse is usually a shorter, stalkier breed used in Rodeo, Western Pleasure, that sort of thing... trail riding. In racing, they run a quarter of a mile (the sprinters).

The American Standardbred is a gaited horse. They show in saddle-seat and carriage divisions. Don't know how far they race, just know that they do so with a buggy behind them.

The standardbred is not a naturally gaited horse - they are harness racing horses. They are divided by gait - trotters or pacers, the latter meaning they pace moving both legs on the same side at the same time. They must continue pacing (or trotting) at speed without breaking into a gallop - if they break they must be pulled back and to the outside until they are back in proper gait.

The *saddlebred* is a show horse that is five gaited. They are not raced.

The Quarter horse was originally developed for working cattle. They are heavily influenced by the TB. They are raced also, usually at shorter distances.

The Thoroughbred is usually raced at longer distances. Some have competed in short sprints but their money against Quarter horses doesn't count. (source a WA state TB did it - his total wins were more than recorded)

You have mentioned three breeds of racing horses in the US.

Quarterhorses are general purpose working horses. They are used for many types of competition such as barrell racing and rodeo. Quarterhorses are raced for one pure burst of speed usually at distances ranging from 330 yds to 550 yds. Many quarterhorses can run 1/4 mile in less than 22 seconds.

Standardbred horses are a breed between the sturdy quarters and regal thoroughbreds. They have been bred to pull wagons and buggys in early america and our forefathers enjoyed competitions to prove the faster horse. Standardbreds in race training are taught to either trot or pace. The rules of racing demand that the horses maintain their proper gait during the running of a race. The great majority of standardbred races are run at the distance of one mile.

Thoroughbred horses are an old and specialized breed of running horses. The descendants of all thoroughbreds today can trace their bloodlines back over 400 years to one of 4 sires of racing horses in their day. These horses and their get were kept and cared for by royal and regal property owners of Europe. The traditions of this royal thoroughbred racing carry forward to this day. Like most pure bred animals, these horses are tempermental, demanding to care for and extremely beautiful when performing their duties. They truly LOVE to run. The thoroughbreds race at distances from 4 furlongs up to two miles and more for steeplechase or "jump" horses.

Enjoy and support the racing breeds and know that the history of our country would be very different if not for these special breeds of horses.

Beautiful .. excellent question!

With 8 Belles truly a strong social gathering is take 2 huge textual content books and positioned them on 4 toothpicks. Thats what the well known TB sounds like 2. The stuff that TB's flow by a great number of crap.like you comprehend on the music the lighting fixtures fixtures are kept on 24/7. 3. i'm happy they wanting to euthnize 8 Belle, unlike Barbaro there became no way he would were an same after that harm. 4. Theres no longer something incorrect with horse racing. you comprehend that there are distinct breed races. Its outstanding to observe AQH's race, The Shetland ponies even as they race its so lovable. Paints race yet each and every of the colour supplies me a headache. there are distinct varieties of races like barrel racing, nicely contesting in most circumstances is a race. 5. injuries are undemanding for ANY horse in guidance, your operating a horse commonly used they are sure to get damage. same with human beings in case you worked out for approximately 2 miles you'll have sore knees, ankles, you could sprain something. 6. real a great number of persons do not comprehend what is going in the back of the scenes of any equine adventure or something. So its no longer they are fault, its a way of incomes money the "american way" 7. a great number of ex race horses make the superb jumpers, contesters
