A hairball is a clump of hair that usually forms a ball. They do have hairball food for cats but a trick is put a little butter ontop of the paws it will help them eliminate it quicker they also make the hairball stuff in the tubes. try brushing them it does help too

My parents cats are fed purely on a dryfood diet and get lots, as do cats with long or thick hair. As stated, a hairball is just that - hair the cat swallows as it cleans. Normally this hair does not form a ball in the stomach, it infact is usually passed through the gut. However for some cats and for some diets (and if the cat is perhaps moulting more than usual) the hair ends up being coughed back up.
Feeding your cat a diet with oils in it (ie, fish) can help. Some dryfoods also have added oils these days to help the digestion.
If you find your cat hacking, you can scoot it outside gently to hack up there rather than the carpet. They may also tend to cough and not produce much. But it's gross - if you train them to scurry off outside when they're about to cough one up you'll save a lot of fuss XD
Also - brush your cat with a good hair collectiing bristle brush every so often specially in summer when they moult more.
Ours havent coughed up hairballs since we started brushing them and feeding them small cans of fish. ^___^

Cats get hairballs from licking themselves all the time and swallowing their hair. Their bodies can't digest large amounts of hair so occasionally they throw up hairballs. It is really bad for long haired cats. There is really nothing you can do except wait for your kitty to finish it's little episode.

Actually there is food you can give a cat to reduce hairballs but also your vet can give you medicine to relieve the complications from hairballs. It is really disgusting once your cat throws it up. It's hair that is caught in your cats stomach and collects until the cat throws it up. They get the hair from grooming themselves.

Put some real Butter on it's Front Paws. About a Tablespoon. Do this about once every 10 days and Hairballs be a thing of the Past. AND your cat will love you, because they love Real Butter.

Healthy cats constantly groom themselves. Hairballs form from this.
You can use hairball remedy, which comes flavored.
Let them lick it rather than force it in their mouth; or it will be hard to get them on a regular routine.

Have you tried the kitten food that reduces hairball. a hairball is exactly what it sounds like. The cats clean themselves so often that they are swallowing their own hair and it eventually clogs up. good luck

There's medicine you can give cats so they don't cough up hairballs. They're just lots of hair that collects after they groom themselves.
