I'm Canadian and my American boyfriend and I wish to get married and live in the states. We do not live together currently. Apparently I have two options, a spousal visa or a fiance visa. Either seems just terrible, far too drawn-out, and exceedingly expensive. I would need to work almost right away. If you have experienced this yourself, please let me know if you had many problems or if you would have done it some other way. Also, the approximate total cost. Please fill me in with as many details as possible!
All help is appreciated, as this has to be the biggest downer on what should be a happy time!

We've already contacted an immigration lawyer - the appointment is set for next week.
I just want a personal, non-lawyer, perspective on this issue.

I'm not a lawyer; I'm a consular officer, one of the people who will issue your visa.

While the process does involve a lot of paperwork, it is actually relatively simple: you file the papers, you pay the fees, you get what you want. There is no other way.

The 'upper' is that you WILL get what you want. I issue fiance and spouse visas every day. It's really not all that difficult. You can certainly do it without a lawyer - that will save a lot of money.

Congratulations!

Oof... I wish I had details for you. I know a gal in Texas who fell in love with a Canadian and they went through the entire fiance visa process. In fact, they got rejected the first time as they didn't have enough proof for the immigration officer that they were a real couple. She often went to a website for information and support... www.visajourney.com I think.

If you have a lawyer, s/he should be able to help a lot. Just make sure you fill out everything 100% perfectly, provide all the evidence you can for anything they request, and document document document. Good luck!

the answer continues to be a similar. definite you could marry an American. THere aren't any regulations that ward off it. even if, you pick to coach for the perfect visas to bypass to the US and stay with him. Marriage does not assure citizThe similar applies to him, marrying a Canadian does not advise he get's to bypass to Canada.

I don't see it as the same problem as if you were just trying to do it to have a green card! Good luck.
