If you believe in evolution theory then you believe that you are related to that tree.

If all life began in the very first amino acid soup a few hundred million years ago, then the answer is yes. Single cell plants would have to be our oldest ancestors because animals can't manufacture their own food and, therefore, needed plants to eat. So, I guess we have to call the tree cousin Cottenwood? Would that mean that even vegetarians are eating their relatives?

I am a Wiccan and as such realize life is life is life...in short we are all part of the whole..Mother Earth. Everything is alive, the rocks, the Air, the Water, the birds and yes even people...we are all related, diverse, but more in common than not.
Additionally as a student of science, a med student, the basic elements, the chemistry, molecules, etc. is very similar in many things on this planet...of course we don't all have an identical composition, but some of things people have in them, trees have as well.
But back to being a Wiccan..everything has a Spirit and as such, if you are interested, you can even communicate with the trees...it is not crazy and one day will be scientific fact..just like all those pesky germs that we once thought to be rubbish.

Billions of years ago, after the Big Bang, new stars exploded and sent forth heavy elements across the universe. Some of these elements became other stars, some became planets like our own.

On this planet, and probably elsewhere, after billions more years, some of the elements coalesced and developed into living organisms.

Some of these organisms evolved into plants and eventually became trees. Some evolved into animals and became us.

Everything on Earth is made from stars: people and trees, rocks and water, air and fire. We're all one.
