My professor in college a couple of years ago (an Old Testament class of course) had a doctorate degree in religious studies and had study the actual Hebrew texts that the Bible is from. Manna was actually a reference to a certain bush/grass type of stuff that in the morning produce a sweet sticky substance (probably kind of doughy) that people in the desert would resort to eating. Manna is also a reference to unleavened bread, but having "bread rain from the heavens" was like saying that God provided for them.. showered them in a blessing when they awoke. It's a little symbolic :)

No, this part of the story was entirely mythological, IMO, unless the extraterrestrials who lead the party with a pillar of clouds by day, and a pillar of fire by night, had a supply of what-not they wise-acred the group with, I'm not sure. Manna sounds curiously like tofu, somehow. You ever tasted tofu?

No, I don't. But it doesn't surprise me that someone could cook up such nonsense.
