If you believe in evolution then the egg came first. A chicken-like creature had to have layed the very first chicken egg. Chicken-like meaning it was hardly distinguishable from a chicken today, but by definition, wasn't exactly a chicken yet! :)

If chickens are anything like humans, then I would have to agree with the old guy. Woman are born with all of the eggs they will ever have, so if chickens experience this same thing, then neither came first, because they came together.

if you believe in evolution, the egg. Since the animal that was the 'first' chicken came from a parent that was not quite a chicken and hatched from the egg.

If you believe in Creationism, the chicken. Nothing there, then the chicken was.

Most likely the egg since many species that lay eggs were around way before the chicken.

The chicken, as told in the creation story. No egg could be laid without a chicken.

it's got to be the egg. The chicken evolved eventually from some other similar type bird so the very first chicken must have come from the egg laid by that bird.
