Alessandro Volta, Italian physicist, was known for his pioneering work in electricity. Volta was born in Italy and educated in the public schools there. By 1800 he had developed the so-called voltaic pile, a forerunner of the electric battery, which produced a steady stream of electricity. In recognition of his work in the field of electricity, the electrical unit known as the volt was named in his honor.

So Volta created a sort of prototype of the electric battery. There have been tons of different types of batteries throughout the past several hundred years--single cell, alkaline manganese cells, nickel-cadmium battery, etc. If you're talking about the kind of standard AA battery that goes in most remote control, Eveready Battery Company introduced the first commercially available alkaline battery in 1959.
