I have a 2 year old german shepherd/husky mix that has been chewing her own toenails off since she was 5 months old. She doesn't chew them completely off but to the extent you would if you would clip them and you can point out a long nail to her and she'll chew it off..
Is this normal for dogs or is she just wierd?

Theres no possible way that she isn't getting enough excercise.. we live on a 20 acre farm and she runs from day light to dusk every day.

I believe it is normal. I have a pitbull and she gets plenty of exercise and does the same thing. I talked to the vet about it and was told that she needed to do walking on the cement sidewalk where her nails get a weardown from walking or running. (She gets her exercise in our huge back yard which is fenced in so she is only on grassy areas).

I had a dog that used to bite on her toenails all the time, and pull at them. Her teeth would rake against it and it drove me crazy. My vet seemed to think it was just a phase she went through because of boredom. We lived in a small apartment at the time. When we moved into our house and she had a yard to play in, she stopped. I would recommend the same thing that parents use for children who bite their nails, that nail polish that makes it taste bad. We used it for our dog and it kept her chewing on them for a couple of days. We were not very diligent at it, but I think if you use it consistently, it would break the habit.

these people that are sayin ur dog isnt gettin enuf excercise isnt necassirly true. my dog gets a lot of excercise and chews her nails off. takin her to the groomers is tragic for her cuz she doesnt like the nail clippers it takes 4 people to old her down to clip her front nails. so she chews them just like yours. its how dogs did it when they were in the wild. completly normal. just make she she doesnt make them bleed.

Smart dog.
Nails that are too long indicate the dog is not getting enough exercise.
You are falling down on your job.
Better yet give the dog some sheep to herd or some game to hunt like nature indented.

I think your dog has a hidden talent! You know how much trouble she is saving you from having to take her to get them trimmed. Wow, smart dog.

That is definitely different.. I know people that bite their fingernails real short... due to Nervousness. but not heard in dogs..Guess that is good though . You won't have to clip them..

i think that dogs are just like humans in that they are able to do some things that some others just can't do. as long as your dog isn't hurting himself, its not a problem... just think of it as saving money on vet bills!

Well it's not abnormal...Can she teach my dogs that?
Just watch what she might walk in before she starts chewing....ie...Harmful toxins

Not really normal but it is a behavior I would not discourage as it would mean less work for me.
