I have an old compaq 286 with only a floppy drive. I want to use it to connect via a wireless PC Card to my network and then using gotomypc.com or letmein.com.

So If I install a OS like DSL (Damn Small Linux) or Pocket Linux or something else that I can install from a floppy (suggestions on what OS to use would be appreciated) will I be able to run a browser and other apps or will I just have a command line.

In short is thier a OS that I can install from a floppy on a 286 machine that gives me more than a command line interface and has a browser and other usefull graphical apps?

dsl and puppy come with modern kernels that don't support 286 anymore. IIRC, 486 and above are well supported but for a 286 you will have to find a good old kernel... maybe 2.2ish or something and an X compatible with them. Then you can have a X and a browser in it. Try Slackware 5 or something?

Also you might find a text based browser like elinks or lynx better than a graphical one on that machine.

Edit: You are gonna love this! Linux customized for 286 laptops! http://tuxmobil.org/286_mobile.html God I love open source! :) DO tell us how you fare. I will watch your question. Please put your experience in as additionalinfo or something!

Just in the event that someone else is trying to do this, Linux never supported anything lower than a 386 processor. However there is a subset of Lionux called ELKS.

Just be aware that it isn't actively developed and is not exactly ready for prime time. Also you need a Linux system in order to compile everything to get it working.
