the local humane society! Dogs sold in pet stores are notorious for being unhealthy....most are from puppy mills. And they are WAY overpriced. Or, if you want a purebred (sometimes still found at your local pound) check out pets for sale ads in your local newspaper, and met the people that bred them, and make sure they are healthy.

You should look on http://www.craigslist.org and in the newspaper's classified ads. You might be able to get one for free. You could get a dog or puppy from the SPCA, too, but they do charge a fee to cover the cost of vaccines.

Check Petfinder.com for local rescues and shelters. Also check the classifieds for people who are needing new homes for their animals. www.craigslist.org as well.
Petstores are the worst place to buy an animal, unless it is an adoption center, where a local rescue sets up.

Go to the SPCA or the Humane Society and adopt. Their shots will be already taken care of, and you'll be saving a life. How much more gratifying can that be?

The close by Humane Society will oftentimes do it for a life like fee. additionally, seem interior the telephone e book for what's referred to as a "spay and neuter health facility." those are little vet clinics that purely fix cats and canines and supply them pictures. i've got taken my cats to them for generic issues like spaying, pictures and de-clawing. They do issues for a fragment of the fee.

Try your local human society or animal shelter. Puppies can be expensive AFTER you get them home too, though.
