Hi, can you help? My 19 month old daughter has recently developed bad breath. She had it first when she had tonsilitis about a month ago, which I took to be part of the symptoms. Now it's back, but I do not think she has tonsilitis again, as she has no fever and she has no problem eating. She is also happy within herself. I have been brushing her teeth twice a day since they started to appear, so I don't think it is that. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

i hope you are not forgetting to clean her tounge as well. if you notice an abundance of white things in her mouth, tell your pedia. silicon nipples could also cause stale breath, it is very important to change your bottle nipple atleast every 3 months, there are certain bacterias that survive in rubber/silicone nipples even though you sterilize them.

I had a similar problem with my 11 month old son after he had tonsilitis. Turns out that he had a anaerobic throat infection (different to tonsilitis) that needed an antibiotic course. The doctor also recommended changing his diet for a bit as some products just don't sit well with some kids when they are sick or recovering. In the end we finished out his course of antibiotics and along with eliminating custard and yogurt products for the next 3 weeks as these tended to exasperate the condition and definatly made the breath worse (the bacteria in the dairy products was just reducing the effectivness of the drugs?). This plus lots of fluids after each snack cleared the bad breath up completely about a week after we finished up the antibiotic course. Not guarenteed to work but it seemed to do the trick for us.

As most of the others have said, she may have some kind of infection. However, if she doesn't seem like she is in pain and is acting normally, I would suggest taking her to the doctor to make sure that she hasn't gotten something stuck up her nose. I work for an ENT doctor and you wouldn't believe what kind of things kids can get stuck up their nose. That can cause little ones to have bad breath all of a sudden. I hope that helps. Good luck dear!

You should take her to the dentist first, it is not uncommon for a 19m old to have cavities. If she doesn't have any and the dentist doesn't suspect abscess or infection in the mouth then you should take her to a ENT (ear nose throat) After having tonsillitis it is possible that she has developed tonsillists, which are little abrasions on the tonsils. There could be a small piece of food stuck in these tonsillists that is causing the odor. good luck.

My daughter has had bad breath for the last few years from chronic allergies, constantly infected adenoids and ear infections. A few months ago they removed her adenoids, put tubes in her ears and got her on the right combination of medicine for the allergies. The bad breath has gone away.

You might want to consider taking her to an ENT rather than your pediatrician/family doctor. It made all of the difference in the world with my daughter. The ENT was better equipped to make the correct diagnosis and determine the proper medicine and treatment for her.

I would take her to see her doctor. I've never seen a baby with bad breath. Maybe an infection or something. She needs to see a doctor.

She needs to go to a dentist, because if the bad breath continues even after brushing there could be a problem. Children should be taken to the dentist just like adults. Good luck!

My son is 4 and he has discovered that he likes garlic. He has bad breath for 2 days after he eats it and brushing doesn't help. So maybe it is a certain food that she eats.

Call your pediatrician just to be sure hun. Bad breath normally happens to people who have teeth and sick people. I wouldn't let it go without a doctor's opinion.
