I agree with the person who said it is a competition and not a sport but I saw a show on the Discovery channel about it and the "couch potatoes" (I'm assuming that you are talking about the fat people that compete) tend to lose to the more in shape contestants (such as the man who just won the hot dog competition). According to the show the fatter contestants, i.e. the couch potatoes, are at a disadvantage because they can not force as much food in their stomachs as the more in shape people because their fat presses down on their stomachs.

The first definition listed for "sport" from dictionary.com:
"Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively."
Competitive eating meets every criteria listed here. So how is it not a sport?
Also, not only could a couch potato not win at competitive eating, but it's a very skill intensive sport with far less luck than most sports. The cream of the crop in professional eating usually win and aren't out of shape.

Sport: An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
That's competitive eating... Whether or not you agree with it is a different story. I think it's gross, but hey, that's just me.

I would say, "NO". Just recently, I have started breaking things down into three categories:
1. Sports
2. Games
3. Competitions
To me, eating would be a competition.

I don't think it's a sport, but they had to come up with something couch potatoes could win at besides Marathon TV watching.

Its not really. Its just something for people to do that gives them an easy trophy lol.
Anyone can eat, but I guess it takes "real champions" to eat competively..
