Since you are considering getting a dog. A puppy would be the best way to go. You can teach the puppy how to act around your child. Soon the dog will love and protect your child. good luck

We got our Golden Retriever puppy when my son was 4. It was hard because you can never, ever leave them alone together. Even to the bathroom. You never know what a 4 year old can come up with in a minute and you never know how the puppy will react. I think kids and puppies are great - just be vigilant and teach the child how to treat the animal properly. good luck! By the way - my son and my dog are best buds now!

Are you wondering if it is safe for the puppy or safe for your cousin?
Little ones not meaning to tend to be alittle ruff with puppies.
Small dogs are usually very nervous dogs and when frightened or handled ruff will snap at a child. Dobermans are very fond of children and become very protective of them. Its the only dog I will own. I would suggest that when you are planning to look for your puppy that you take your cousin with you and the first puppy that comes up to your cousin is the one you should get. Labs and Retrievers are also very good around children.

You have to be very careful having a child that young around a puppy. Kids are clumsy and might fall on puppy, hurting the puppy. If you have the child around the puppy I would closely supervise at all times

Have you considered adopting an older dog? They generally come to you with some manners, and many have experience around kids. If you work with a breed-specific rescue they will match you with a dog who has been around small chilren. Puppies can do well with small children but you need to supervise them very closely. Puppies don't always know that it isn't ok to chew on children or that they can't jump up on small children and sometimes small children don't know that they can hurt small puppies.

Sure. Just teach your four year old it's a puppy and not a toy that can be thrown across the room.

Yes It'll be fine! There can only be good out of it because the dog will become more social and the child will learn to not be afraid of dogs!
