Vegetarians are not vegetarians because they love animals.

They are vegetarians because they hate vegetables!

Many don't. Some do. I think it's similar to why a vegetarian won't eat meat but still eats dairy and eggs. Animals go through just as much, or more, torture to produce milk and eggs... yet vegetarians still consume them.

It also depends on why a person is a vegetarian. Some don't eat meat for health reasons, religious reasons, or environmental reasons—not because they think killing animals for food is morally wrong. So they wouldn't think it's wrong to kill animals for leather, either.

As a vegan, I will not buy any leather or wool products. But I won't throw out the leather or wool products I already own, bought before I became a vegan. I don't want to waste the money I spent! Plus, if I just throw them out, then the animals who were sacrificed to make those products will end up in the trash, and their death will have been in vain.

that's quite the general statement! I have lots of veg friends. their reasons for not eating meat vary. some just don't like it. Some because the way animals are treated. Some of my other friends eat meat, but only from their personal family farm, because they feel the meat from huge companies has negative energy because of the way they are treated, and simply don't want to put that in their bodies. now, all of these different friends... none of them that I can think of wear leather. So, I guess maybe you know a couple of people like that. It's definitely not most vegetarians. I actually think you don't really know any, because if you did, you would ask THEM this question. I think you are just making generalizations because you think vegetarians are somehow silly.

I can't believe so many people already answered this question. I wanted to be the first, and I was prepared with a really profound answer, but now I can see by reading the already answers that mine isn't so profound.

But wearing a belt doesn't hurt my health.

Meat is a whole other issue. I know some people all in one family and they all have various kinds of health problems, each one with their own problem, mostly involving pain; and they come from a family where they grew up eating all the meat they wanted. The sad thing is, they still don't make the connection.

Vegetarians are vegetarians for different reasons. Some do it because they don't agree with how the animal was treated and MOST of the time you won't see those people wearing clothing that comes from an animal. Some vegetarians are that way because of religious reasons or sometimes they just don't like meat. Now, I ask you-- why do people ask stupid questions like this without researching first?

Many vegetarians use vegetarianism as a form of specialness - an instant identity. I see this over and over again and watch as many vehemently deny this dynamic, only to prove that it's true by some comment or attitude towards others that shows an underlying judgment that is intense. To see this more clearly, a good example may be my friend: he was a vegetarian UNTIL he became a serious Zen student. Why? Because, through self investigation, he realized that his vegetarianism was all about ego goals: make him special, judge others, etc.

Others don't like the reality that 'life feeds on life' and that all complex organisms need to kill to exist. And, so, we humans leverage our ability to put things into different categories and, therefore, we decide that the 'vegetable kingdom' (given that it's without neurological mechanisms) is of a lower life form. And then we pat ourselves on the back with how high on the ethics and self-awareness scale we've gone, deluding ourselves into not seeing that it's the subtlest form of ego.

I'm a veg and i have leather shoes and belts. The reason chose to not eat meat is because I feel better not having it in my diet, not because of the treatment of the animal.

Not all vegetarian are alike. A vegan usually doesn't eat meat or meat by-products, such as dairy, cheese and jello (which is made from hooves). Some are less strict about their diet and the items they use, such as leather. Some vegetarians each poultry and dairy items, but no red meat. As the last comment stated, you shouldn't generalize all vegetarians....or people for that matter.

It's hard to find decent non leather shoes, and at least it's just a by product of the meat industry. They last a long time, it's not like you eat your shoes, so it isn't like a major cause of death for cattle. It isn't a very ideal situation though.
