Either way is totally acceptable and it really comes down to your personal preference. When kraut is out of the can it is cold but crunchy, when heated it loses most of it's crunch.
I like it crunchy myself

I come from German ancestry and I have never seen anyone in my family not cook or at least heat up sauerkraut!!

You can have it warm or cold which ever way siuts you.Personally I dont eat sauerkraut or neither do I like hotdogs.

the proper way it to open the can pour in pot add a little water and heat for crunchy, boil 5 minutes for soft. you can also put the hot dogs right in the kraut and cook together, for a better flavor.

I like it chilled and then put on a warm hot dog. Good contrast.

I just dump mine right out of the can,, we dont' like it heated.

I like to cook of any can funk. Hot kraut wont make your dog cold either.
