The previous poster gave a good range. However, if you go way out in Queens, Bronx or Brooklyn, you may still find a place for around $600, but will probably be way in the heck out and a difficult commute. Additionally, I just relocated from Manhattan and found that the range for One bedrooms there has crept up to about $2500 - $3000 in many areas. The farther you are up Manhattan (above 96th street) and away from the subway lines (e.g. 1st avenue on Upper East Side) the less expensive (more in the 1600 - 2000 range)

About $2,000 for Manhattan while other areas tend to be around $800 to $1,200. Checkout craigslist.com. They have apartment listings for NYC.
