he is a beagle and loves small dogs but whenever he sees any larger dog he tries to attack without reason. once when he was weeks old a lab. got after him but he has never been in a fight of any kind. i am just really perplexed at what is happening with him and why all of a sudden. he is two years old.

My male Great Dane was fine with smaller dogs but HATED bigger ones (luckily we did not find many bigger ones.) It has to do with the male dominance thing. Neutering might help some, but I suggest obedience classes for lasting results.

when he was a puppy or young dog, he was probably set on by a larger dog. He remembers and is now scared of bigger dogs, so he attacks before they can attack him.

To fix this get a friend that has a big dog to stand a few metres away. have your dog on a short lead too. Walk slowly up to the other dog with yours right beside you, if your dog growls or tries to bite the other dog, tell your dog off very firmly. If your dog doesn't growl or any thing praise lavishly and give him pats. Keep getting closer doing this.
If you do this often, your dog should get the message:' dont growl or bite, be friendly'
Remember to always praise your dog for doing the right thing.

Hope it works,
Alison

He wants to be the pack leader, you need to get Cesar's Way by Cesar Millan "The Dog Whisperer". If you have cable watch his show on the National Geographic Channel, he addresses this issue alot. He has helped many, even the most aggressive dogs become well behaved, not interested in attacking other dogs or people but a wonderful member of the family.

Hi, being a dog lover myself this sounds familiar. For a start Beagles (NO OFFENCE) are born hunters and also agressive when they feel challenged...so thats probably the main reason. Also, if he hasnt been socialised around dogs biggger than him then this is an important factor.

Try gradually introducing him to biggger dogs...let the dog see YOU with a bigger dog then he should come round and understadn there is no threat. My Golden Retreiver had problems with all (human) males as a puppy any man that came to the house she would warn off, we cured this by socialising her around men and letting her see us with men and she finally settled down.
Hope this helps : )

Now that he is a little older he thinks that other big dos are goin to hurt him again. He gets along with smalled dogs because he remembers what happened to him when he was smaller he feels that he is protecting the smaller dogs.

Cuz he is threatened by the big dogs. He's trying to show them that he is tougher then they are. That's also why small dogs bark more that big dogs.

he is probably frightened and tring attack as best form of defence. keep him on the lead and let him gain confidence by meeting friendly big dogs - reward him for showing no bad tedencies
