I tried both. Gained 6 pounds on the Atkins diet - following it to the letter.
Also, very hard to stick to, as you never get to even have a slice of bread again. I tried to sell my atkins books on ebay - nobody bid on them whatsoever. I did an ebay search, nobody was bidding on any atkins books at all!

I lost 50 pounds last year - on the South Beach diet. You don't give up all bread forever, and it weans you back into correct amounts. I found it very easy to stick to. Even enlisted a few friends to try it, they all lost 20-60 pounds each too. And happily, this diet helps you lose the belly fat first!

I also bought a dog - she's a mutt but I love her. I walk her every morning for about 30-45 minutes, depending on the weather. Great way to relieve stress too. If you don't have/don't want a dog - make sure that you get some sort of walking or other exercise a few times a week. You won't lose any weight, as your metabolism decreases with each day that you don't exercies.

And now that I'm pregnant with twins - I'm still eating healthy because I'm used to it!

Eat right, exercise (moderately at first, then increase as weeks go by) - get into the habit of being healthy. It'll get to a point where you don't even think about it, sooner than you think.

I have read a bit about both, and followed neither. I think South Beach is better than Atkins, because Atkins calls for a lot of expensive supplements and stuff, where South Beach suggests the foods that contain those nutrients.

If the diets call for in-between meal snacks, do it. That keeps the hunger pains away, and lets you stick to it. Also, drink water as suggested. Don't substitute soda or coffee or any other water based drink for it. Use the water as a filler-upper if you get hungry without a snack handy.

Funny you should ask...I have been doing a lot of research and I have heard that the best is the is the one that is followed on the show Celebrity Fit Club. The book which details all the info is The Fat Smash Diet : The Last Diet You'll Ever Need. Also, Bob Greene's Total Body Makeover is definitely worth checking out. Good luck!

Don't do the atkins diet. Everyone I know who's done that ends up with AWFUL breathe. Here's the perfect diet...

-ONLY fruits before noon, Raw salad and steamed esparagus before your lunch meal, a snack before dinner and the your dinner.

Stay away from Fried foods!!! Cut back on dairy and meat!
Drink a glass of lemon and water every evening before getting ready for bed.

Good Luck!

Both seem to get great results. I think SB has a bigger variety of foods allowed. Plus they have a few snacks that will help you stick.
