Early life
Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey to Lancelot Owens (a police officer) and Rita (a high-school art teacher); they divorced when she was eight years old. After singing in the choir of her local Baptist church,[1] she performed the number "Home" from the musical The Wiz in a high school play. Born Dana Owens, her stage name, Latifah (لطيفة), meaning "delicate" and "sensitive" in Arabic, was given to her when she was eight by her cousin. While in high school, she was a power forward on her basketball team. Her father also gave her lessons in karate and firearms use.

No, never saw my father without him fist having a perfect shave and every hair in place. He carried a comb in his pocket all the time. My step-dad had everything at one time or the other. Full beard, goatee, mustache, sideburns, one time he went too far. He cut his full mustache off in a sort of Hitler style, wore it for a day or two, really made my mother mad. She was mad when he took her shopping wearing it in that fashion. When they got home from shopping she let him have it, telling him she would not go out with him again until it was off. He didn't keep that look for more then those few days, everyone was giving him dirty looks in public. I still wonder what he was thinking wearing it like that. Almost like last min. he couldn't bring himself to shave off the entire moustache.

No he didn't and can't remember any of the men in the family having a mustache! My hubby had one and it was like a wire brush! He had to shave it off because my face was a mess! Red bumps!
