My partner and I are heading to BKK Sept. 5th to teach English for a year. We don't have our visas yet and we only have one way tickets. Does anyone know what Visa I should be applying for? I feel as though the Non-Immigrant B Visa is my best bet but there's still a lot of red tape and I'm not sure I can provide the correct documentation. Any suggestions?

The air ticket you have mentioned, you should apply for non immigrant B type visa for Thailand. To get that visa, you need to get following documents are needed

1. appointment letter from hiring company
2. approval letter from ministry of labor that you can work here (this document should be arranged by the hiring company)
3. one way air ticket
4. requisite visa fee

No 2. document is the most important and without which you will not get non immigrant B type visa.

Now if the hiring company is unable to give you the document of no.2, you better have two way air ticket and apply for tourist visa. Reach here and ask for relevant documents from the hiring company, fly back with relevant documents and come back with non immigrant b type visa

Good luck

If you are working here, you will need a work visa... if you are indeed working for a legitimate school, they should provide help in this area.. By coming on a one way tkt [ usually just abt the same price as a RT tkt. ] you might be compromising your chances of entry because they will want to know that you are going home too, or that you are gainfully employed... Check with your school first - they should have answers for you, and check with a Thai embassy before coming.. a legit school will help.. some of the less than legit schools are in the habit of jerking around the teachers, from what I have heard - - if you give me more info abt the school, I will be glad to ask other people that I know who are teachers and have been through the hurdles here.. you can email me kenk2424@yahoo.com

It's a little sketchy that your school hasn't set you up with Visa information, unless you're working close to the border and they are planning to do a faculty border run as a part of orientation. I had to travel to Malaysia when I got my working Visa - I entered the country with a tourist visa, then got the job so my school sent me to Penang. They gave me a 90 Day working visa - and then I had to sign a thousand pieces of paper, as well as have several letters written by our Thai Principal. THEN we had to go to immigration and get my papers approved. It's a long, tedious process to get Non-Immigrant B status, and the school is usually in control of that.

I'd ask for some serious details first. Individuals cannot get an immigrant B visas by themselves...

The school that will be employing you should have all of the necessary information for your trip and stay within the country. Contact them first and also consult with your nearest US embassy and Thai Embassy for clarification.

Good luck.
