The one answer about separating it from lust....interesting but it cant be done. I am a Christian and yes, I masturbate, and I sin. It is not the masturbating that is the sin. The sin arises from the fact that in order to masterbate you have to"think", "fantasize" about something in order to get the arousal, and nine times out of ten, the act or actions that you are thinking about are the sin. To dwell on an idea as if to be acting/performing the idea is as if you "ARE" comitting the actual act. that is what is sin.

Before Jesus' words were corrupted, he tried to get across the nature of reality: that there is no sin, guilt, and hell. The parable of the prodigal son tries to show people project their own image of God outward and don't like it when Uncondtional Love shows that the whole ego thought system (reward, punishment, sin, forgiveness, etc.) isn't real (remember how mad the 'good' son gets when he sees that God doesn't behave the way the son thinks he should - by rewarding the obedient, etc?).

When people hear this, many respond in a very spiritually immature way with 'then why do good if we're going to get the same reward as the guy who does bad?'. Again, same response as the 'good son' in the parable. God tries to tell the good son that the good son's very nature and reality (that he's w/ god and has everything and that the nature of everything is that no one is separate and left out) IS the 'reward'. That it's time to celebrate when someone 'comes home'. That there's no sin... That when one realizes their fundamental nature that it's impossible to 'do bad' ...

What does one do before reaching that realization? One determines whether an act is harmful to oneself or another without resorting to rigid doctrine and theology. Does masturbation hurt anyone? No ... go ahead :)

People talk about sin all day, what is a sin, who does it. Many will tell you you are going to hell. But the truth is that if you believe in Christianity you should know that according to the bible, just being born you are a sinner. Everything about us is a sin, if you are Christian. The fact is, Masturbation is a normal part of life. It is a way to better understand our bodies and sexuality. It is only considered a sin, cause the church does not want to admit that sex is a natural part of life. It is what makes us, and shapes us. And talking about it would mean that they are for it. Yet while they are blasting it in their words, they have the largest sex scandals of any other group.

I agree with Keith.
I've questioned my pastors, etc. It's kind of like the whole WWJD thing. If you're trying to be more Christ-like....would HE do it?
When Jesus says that even if you think about being with someone besides your wife....you are committing adultery.
I've tried to find the loop-hole and think that I can fanticize about my future husband on our honey moon!! Deep in my heart, I know it's still sin. I understand why people do it and why & how we justify it. I know that you can get obessed with it too which turns to idolatry. I also know that if I can purify my mind, then when I do get married everything in that area will be more wonderful than I can imagine. God meant for sex to be between a husband & wife....2 people. I don't believe He made it only for procreation. I won't go into detail my struggle with it, but I will say that self-control is a fruit of the spirit and it happens. If I can control drinking & eating, then I can control that. I also prayed about it....I didn't think I could pray about something like that, but one day I just said real quick....oh, and God could you help me with "that", and I do believe He did. My disclaimer being that once in a while I do have to make sure everything is still working.... :)

No, it's not a sin for anyone. Why do you think that God created us as sexual beings? It is normal and natural. Plus, it's the safest sex around. What more could you do to prevent STD's and unwanted pregnancy? And, it will make you a whole lot more easy going, since you don't have built up sexual frustration.

By the way, the whole sin thing was made up by early male religious leaders in order to promote their patriarchal agenda to suppress women in society and control the masses.

Its actually not mentioned in the Bible directly but it is viewed as an unclean habit.Colossians 3:5, Mattew 5:27,28, It makes you think about thoughts that you were only meant to think of when you're married. If you want to stop, then just pray about. 1 John 3:20.

In the bible, it is a sin to masturbate, because it's like wasting your seed on lustful desires. God made us share that precious life-giving fluid to make children for him and to serve him, not waste it on the ground like this guy Onan did.

But in my life, I think masturbation is a good way to be astinant from sex, because of the lower risk of getting someone pregnant and it's also healthy to relieve some that pressure welling up.

Yes, in most cases it is. This is what Jesus Christ said, Matthew 5:27 - 28 "You have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I tell you, That whoever looks at a woman with lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart."

So if you are single and thinking about "Jimmy Joe" as you masturbate, then you are committing adultery in your heart. But, if you are married, and your husband is out of town, it would be acceptable to masturbate and think about him.

And yes, it is natural for everyone to desire to masturbate when they are young, but we need to resist that urge. For in the Bible we are told that, "The spirit wrestles against the flesh, and the flesh against the spirit." So ask the Lord to help you resist that temptation.

I think yes. Why? Bcos when one masturbates, he/she thinks about someone as an object of pleasure. One doesn't masturbate out of the blue. It entails thinking about that person. Jesus informed us that when one lust after a woman without even being physical results in the committing of a sin. Get it

You should be atheist, then you don't need to worry about that. You can have fun, and it will free up your Sundays. With your Sundays free and you not taking time for praying, you will have time for a relationship that can lead to sex. Then you wont have to masturbate, and will not need to worry if it is a sin.If you don't want to go atheist, then I can still help. A priest can not marry, so he has sex with alter boys rather than masturbate, so it must be a sin.
