According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
"About 5.7 million American adults or about 2.6 percent of the population age 18 and older in any given year, have bipolar disorder."
This does not include children and adolescents with the disorder so a full and accurate number is unavailable. I'm sure the real numbers would be higher because so many people are walking around with this disorder, yet are undiagnosed.
Check the link below for more information on bipolar disorder:
Sincerely,
Terry

Supposedly 1% but I think it's a lot higher. That's my opinion as a mother of 2 bipolar children and a teacher of many bipolar students.

I am curious as to why you posted your question under Infectionous Diseases. Do you think bi-polar is a catchy disease through the air or something?
Bi-Polar, just like other mental health disorders is often a genetic condition. Someone in your family had bi-polar and as unfortunate as it may be, you have it also.
Through proper medication and therapy, you can have a productive life. As for the exact amount of people who have it, you may get more info from About.Com which targets Bi-Polar questions and issues often.
Good luck to you!
I hope I was some what helpful!

if you read the definition its answers it self we all do to one degree our another it is all away to justify a way of getting payed for there services under the bipolar umbrella your physiologist must have a recognized disorder to justify payment from your health insurance so the physiologist came up with this general term to categorize all of us believe it or not that's the truth sorry!
