2 good questions.

the side burns are called peyot (or peyos) and are a requirement derived from the biblical injunction against cutting the hair on certain parts of the head. The length is dependent on a specific interpretation -- my modern orthodox sensibility just has then cut neatly at the cheek bone but many have significantly longer ones.

the boxes, called "tefillin" are derived from the bible (make a sign upon your arm and between your eyes) and include biblical verses on them. Adult males put them on for morning prayers during the week (not on sabbath or holidays). there is an arm box and strap and a head box and strap.

It's okay to ask questions, and there doesn't seem to be anything offensive about this one. I don't know either, that's why I was curious to see if there were answers, rather than a telling-off.
