If the person is speaking informally and fast there may be a slight tendency to run the two words together. I don't do it and I don't know anyone who would consider doing it while speaking formally or in front of a group. Personally I think it is a matter of laziness on the part of the speaker. I consider it a less than desirable trait and would encourage you not to start it. It is better to speak too formally in an informal setting than to speak to informally in a formal setting. EDIT: May I add; you have nothing to appologize for. Your English is better than many native speakers and your desire to learn the speech habits, and probably the slang as well, makes me delighted to help you. I do accept email at my profile. I do get busy some times and am slow to respond but I would be glad to answer other questions of this nature if you so desire.

It might depend on where you're from, but here in North America you do pronounce the letter T. So "trait" would rhyme with words like "mate" and "state".

According to Wiki both are right. However, I've never heard it pronounced tray- it sounds a little French to me!
You are clearly not meant for each other and you should dump him immediately!

Tray is correct. To pronounce the t is to betray ignorance.

You should pronunce it: TRAIT. You don't pronounce the T at the end when you speak French.
