Afraid not... Hershey didn't invent it...although he did bring it to the USA...
Chocolates origins were in a drink made by the aztec indians...It was called Xocolatl (meaning bitter water). and was not sweet at all.
It was served to Hernan Cortés by Moctezuma, and Cortés consequently took it to Spain... in 1520

In Spain sugar was added to the drink to make it more palatable, and it became a fashionable hot beverage...

And when Ana, princess of Spain married Louis the XIII in 1615, she took the makings with her to France...Under Louis XIII and Louis XIV, the french started "chocolateries" where chocolate was the main beverage..and served with sweets and pastries....

As a powder, it was produced industrially and mecanically for the first time, in Barcelona, Spain, in 1777.

The first chocolate factories were founded in 1819 by a Mr. Pelletier in Paris and Mr. J.L. Cailler in Vevey, Switzerland (Cailler chocolates still exist!).

The first chocolate with hazelnuts was made in Lausanne Switzerland by a Mr.A.C. Kohler in 1831.

The first chocolate tablets were produced in England by Fry & Sons. ..in 1847

And The milk chocolate tablet was invented by Mr. Daniel Peter AND Mr. Henri Nestlé (who was an expert on child nutrition), in 1875.
Nestlé' Chocolates has been going strong ever since, and is now one of the largest conglomerates in the world food business.

Hershey was founded in 1876 as a caramel compàny by Mr. Milton S. Hershey, and failed twice before he finally succeeded on a third attempt. In 1896 he bought machinery imported from Germany, and started the making of chocolate to cover his caramels, he then sold the original caramel company and dedicated the rest of his life to chocolate making.
The Hershey's Kisses were born in 1907.

Although Nestle in Europe and Hershey in the USA are the two best and most well known chocolate makers... internationally known...

The most exquisite (and expensive) chocolates are made in Belgium by the Leonidas and Godiva companies.
And the small chocolate shops all over Europe with chocolates made by artisan hands are some of the most delicious in the world!

The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY), formerly Hershey Foods Corporation (name changed in April 2005[5]), commonly called Hershey's, is the America's largest chocolate company.[6] The headquarters are located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, a town permeated by the aroma of cocoa on some days and home to Hershey's Chocolate World. It was founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894 as the Hershey Chocolate Company, a subsidiary of his Lancaster Caramel Company. Hershey's candies are sold worldwide.[7]

Hershey's is one of the oldest chocolate companies in the United States, and an American icon for its chocolate bar. Today, The Hershey Company owns many other candy companies and is also affiliated with Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company, which runs Hersheypark, a chocolate-themed amusement park; the Hershey Bears hockey team; HersheyPark Stadium; and the GIANT Center

I don't know, but you could probably go to Hershey's website and find out. In my opinion, Hershey's is the best chocolate in the world. It's so much better than Godiva and the other more expensice ones.

I don't know about that, but Hershey did start making milk chocolate instead of pure chocolate to make it more affordable for everyone. I saw that on the food network.

Milton Hershey was born on September 13, 1857, in a farmhouse near the Central Pennsylvania village of Derry Church. Milton was in the fourth grade when his Mennonite father, Henry Hershey, found his son a position as an printer's apprentice in Gap, Pennsylvania. Milton later became an apprentice to a candy-maker in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and candy-making became a passion which Milton grew to love. In 1876, when Milton was only eighteen-years old, he opened his own candy shop in Philadelphia. However, the shop was closed after six years and Milton moved to Denver, Colorado, where he worked with a caramel manufacturer and learned caramel-making. In 1886, Milton moved back to Lancaster, Pennsylvania and started the successful Lancaster Caramel Company.

In 1893, Milton Hershey attended the Chicago International Exposition where he bought German chocolate-making machinery and began making chocolate-coated caramels. In 1894, Milton started the Hershey Chocolate Company and produced Hershey chocolate caramels, breakfast cocoa, sweet chocolate and baking chocolate. He sold his caramel business and concentrated on chocolate-making.

The Hershey Chocolate Company has made or currently owns many famous Hershey chocolate candies including: Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars, Cadbury Creme Eggs candy, Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme candy bar, Hershey's milk chocolate and milk chocolate with almonds bars, Hershey's Nuggets chocolates, Hershey's Kisses and Hershey's Hugs chocolates, Kit Kat wafer bar, Reese's crunchy cookie cups, Reese's NutRageous candy bar, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Sweet Escapes candy bars, TasteTations candy, Twizzlers candy, Whoppers malted milk balls, and York Peppermint Patties.

Hershey's Kisses chocolates were first introduced in 1907 by Milton Hershey, who trademarked the "plume" extending out of the wrapper in 1924.

Hershey, Pennsylvania
The Sweetest Place on Earth!

For most people around the world, the name Hershey means chocolate. Visitors notice streets with names like Cocoa Avenue and Chocolate Avenue and streetlights in the shape of Hershey Kisses. The factory and town, founded by candy entrepreneur Milton S. Hershey, is now a destination all its own.

Because of the success of his chocolate company, in the early 1900s Mr. Hershey created a planned community with streets lined with trees, water, sewer, electricity, telephones, and trolleys. A theater, library, and amusement park were built for the community, which mainly consisted of Hershey factory employees. Today, Hersheypark has become one of the top theme parks in the world.

Hershey also used his millions to create a world-famous school for orphan children that to this day remains one of the great examples of American philanthropy. In 1910 Milton and Catherine Hershey started their school with four orphan boys. (They had no children of their own.) In 1918, Hershey left his entire personal fortune to the school, making headlines in the New York Times. The statute dedicated to him in Founders Hall reads, "His deeds are his monument. His life is our inspiration."
