A root canal is when the pulp of your tooth (the nerves and blood supply) are removed from the tooth. The space where the pulp once resided is then filled with a substance called gutta percha. Then, the tooth is either filled or crowned.
After this procedure, your tooth is essentially 'dead.' However, you want to try to maintain and keep the tooth. Once a tooth is removed from your mouth, the bone that supported that tooth will begin to resorb and will eventually disappear. So, the longer you keep the tooth, the more healthy your surrounding bone is.

Wow, I have no idea what these people are talking about.
First of all, only your dentist can tell you whether you need a root canal. You may not.
Second of all, it doesnt hurt. You will be given enough novocain so that you dont feel a thing. Even the novocain shot doesnt hurt anymore.
Third, it would be best for you to have an endodontist do the root canal. This is a doctor who specializes in doing only root canals! You would be in very good hands. What they do is they remove the nerves that are in the tooth so you dont have any more pain. Then they fill it back up and your dentist puts a crown (the top of the tooth) on it.
The only downside to the whole process is that it is rather costly.

just because the tooth is changing colors doesn't always mean that it needs a root canal.
sometimes the margins gets stained or the filling takes on stain but if you do need a root canal because the nerve has died.... it is very simple usually.
they numb the tooth and clean out the pulp chamber and canal/canals of the dead tissue and then fill the canals and chamber with gutta percha usually and refill the tooth - sometimes called a build-up. if this tooth is a premolar or a molar- you will want to have a crown placed over the tooth to protect it as soon as possible but sometimes if it is a front tooth - you have a little more time but not always. this is because more chewing action is on the posterior teeth than the front teeth . therefore as the tooth that has had the root canal gets more brittle because it no longer has a blood supply- the tooth becomes more vulnerable to breaking.
it is not painful

A root canal is when the dentist drills down into your tooth and "kills the nerve" then they clean out the canal, then drill down your tooth to a nub and cap it.
This sounds HORRIBLE. But if you have a good dentist, it's really not. Getting a tooth pulled is worse. They will give you numbing shots and once it kicks in close your eyes and it's not big deal. In fact if you need a root canal the pain you feel afterwards is much less than the pain you are in right now.

If there is damage to the nerve of the tooth a root canal therapy or treatment is where the dentist goes in and removes the nerve and replaces it with a kinda "dummy" nerve. It's is rather invasive, but the pain is not intense, nothing an advil wouldn't help.

your teeth have a nerve that runs right up the middle of the tooth. they stick a needle into that nerve and pull it out. I'm not sure how they get to it, maybe break the tooth. I had one when I broke my tooth in half and the nerve was showing. it is not a fun experience

If a tooth is sensitive/painful to hot or cold, it may mean you need root canal treatment.

It means the pulp in your tooth is decayed (infected.) .. what they do is drill a hole in your tooth then use a pipe cleaner like tool to remove the soft pulp of the tooth ... The proceedure is not really that bad.. is much like getting a filling.
