Yeah, I understand the previous answers, but I think the question is why NINE lives and not TEN or FIVE?
I'm also interested.

cats can adjust their body well and that comes into handy when they fall, they are able to cushion it with their pads on their feet.
ppl once did a study where they put a few hundred cats to the study. they droped cats from tall buildings in new york and 8 out of ten survived. some only suffered broken teeth etc.
its cruel but it proves that cats' survivalbility are good

Mine wasted a few waking up on the ledge of my first apartment and taking a long walk off a short ledge. I've been out of that building for 14 years now, and the cat's still around.

A cat has nine lives - Cats are hardy, careful animals and when falling will land on their feet generally without ill effect.

It's because cats are so nimble and athletic. They don't have 9 lives so don't try to take the first one, because it will be its last one.

It is a tribute to their perceived durability, their occasional apparent lack of instinct for self-preservation, and their seeming ability to survive falls that would be fatal to other animals.
