He forgot to fill out a simple form that tell the IRS of his active military status.

Now it's going to take a whole lot of effort to correct.

Get the forms and get them filled out.
If need be, contact your local Congressman and get them involved.

Here is a link to the IRS page with info on defferal of back taxes for active military people.

Good Luck and God Bless.

He is going to have to do alot of leg work. He should have been protected under the soldiers and sailors act and might need to contact JAG for help. Does he have someone with Power of Attorney state side? His truck legally can't be repo'd while he's deployed either. he may actually have some lawsuits. generally the IRS doesn't just seize your account and take your money unless you or a spouse have owed monies for a very long time. He may have been very aware of his debt and just let it slide since he was deployed. We don't honestly have all sides to the story. If the debt wasn't his and it was a spouse he can also claim and file and injured spouse form and get most of his if not all his money back if they find the debt wasn't really his.

Your bank account can be frozen if you are delinquent in your payments. In most cases, they would try to find another way, but since the soldier is out of the country, they probably couldn't contact him to make alternate arrangements. What does him being a soldier have anything to do with it in your opinion? It is a shame that this happened while he is in service, but everyone pays. That's the IRS motto. They get you no matter who you are.

Sales taxes are not paid to the IRS. Sales taxes go to the state and local governments.

Typically if the IRS gets to the point where they are seizing accounts - he has owed money to the government and not made an attempt to pay it back.

My guess is that he has not been paying his taxes and the IRS has caught up with him.

Maybe he was a democrat or his mom spoke out against the war.

Or he lives in New Orleans. Those soldiers got royally screwed.

Because it is part of a beaurocratic organization. Beauracracies don't work by compassion, and common sense - they work by regulation, and they work by the clock.
