About 20min into reading my textbook, I start falling asleep. I don't want to take medication, I get a pretty good amount of sleep (7 hours - that's as good as its going to get!). Are there certain foods, juices, etc that help you stay alert?

It could be the chair you are sitting in or the way you are sitting, you can actually restrict blood flow to your brain, because your chair is putting pressure on arteries in your legs
Try a different chair, and make sure you sit up straight.
Also might want to try a little exercise when you get tired, to increase blood and oxygen to the brain.
Also try Ginko biloba and tyrosine, they will keep you mentally awake without having to resort to caffiene.

Take notes; the act of writing and increased focus should help.
Read while walking on a treadmill or stationary bike, etc.

I had the same problem, and I resolved it by drinking a glass of orange juice before reading, and while at the task, I always drink plenty of cold water. It keeps the head fresh. Plus, don't do important reading on your big comfy couch!

Coffee or try eating something with carbs (for fast energy) and with protein (for long lasting energy) at least that works for me when I'm trying to read or when I have to go to work (early morning shift)
