ADD is attention deficit disorder. It's not something you get - it's something in your brain that is wired wrong and responds to stimulation differently, so that you're almost hyper-perceptive, but it doesn't do you any good, because you're so easily distracted. The most common form is ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Most common treatment is amphetamines, which have the opposite effect in people with ADD/ADHD, producing a sedative effect and allowing them to focus, rather than hyping them up more.

ADD is Attention deficit disorder. Many kids are diagnosed with this problem when they have focusing problems, or learning disabilities. It can be corrected with some prescriptions, but they often have some unwanted side effects. Kids is ADD have trouble with paying attention to what people are telling them, reading, or anything that does not interest them. ADHD is ADD with hyperactivity, which causes children to act up, or bounce around alot, especially in instances where the child is not, or can not focus on the task at hand. Particularly problematic in a classroom where one child can take 90% of the effort of the teacher. Lethargic teachers will just pass the children or constantly pawn him off to other problems. Proactive teachers will help parents in determining the source of the problem and do their job in helping teach children.
You get ADD often by a simple chemical imbalance in the brain, not allowing neurons to fire effectively creating an extremely short term attention span... It can be cause by brain inactivity such as too much TV or not enough stimuli as well. MTV is a huge instigator with their 2 second clips bouncing around the screen teaching children to not watch anything specific just to get a 'cool' angle on something.
If you have a child with ADD a quick trip to your local psychologist can help you determine how badly or if it is actually ADD and not another problem. Usually a visit like that is no more than a couple hundred dollars or much cheaper, and can save you and your child years of frustration growing up. Good luck

For the most part its propaganda by the pharm companies to make you think you are sick and need prescribed medicine to cure it when in fact people have been 'dealing' with this since the beginning of time.

If you truly think you have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) then I suggest doing mental exercises to help you maintain attention and retain information. Don't go on these meds, the Dr's really have no idea what long term effect it will have nor exactly which medicine will work, if any do. The mental exercises are a permanent solution while the meds are a temporary.
