If so, how big do they get? Did they make a comeback?

As of June, about 60 condors live in the wild in California, in Ventura, Santa Barbara, Kern, Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties.

Condors have a wingspan of 9 ½ feet, and can weigh up to 25 pounds as adults.

They are very, very gradually making a comeback, through the captive breeding program run by the US Fish and Wildlife Department. They had gotten down to a population of 22 birds, and it was decided that the only way to manage it was to capture every bird. They did so, and through their captive breeding program, the population is up to a little under 300 birds, about 130 of them having been released into the wild. About 6-10 birds have been released every year since 1996.

I know there was a huge reintroduction effort for California Condors in Big Sur. Since Big Sur is some 90 miles of coastline, I'm not sure if you would consider that area as central or southern but here is a link: http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/condors.html

Here is an abstract from biologists concerning wild California Condors: http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1046/j.1523-1739.2000.99113.x;jsessionid=aznJbUg_riee17mf7W?cookieSet=1&journalCode=cbi

California Condors can reach wingspans of 2.8 m (over 9 ft) and can weigh up to 8.5 kg (18¾ lb

I recently received an email of a pic of Condors feeding on a beached Grey Whale in California, think I deleted it already though.
