Thank you Viscount Def - beautifully put...
May I also add that when a Gentleman invites me out to dinner, I do my utmost to make him proud. At least half a day is lost -Hair, nails & skin are glossed to their highest, fine clothes, shoes and jewellry are procured.
It costs me an absolute fortune before he even picks me up, and all for his pleasure.
Should i really be expected to pick up the bill as well?

I totally agree. I am a feminist and expect to have equal rights with everything.
Most people do not agree with me. I would never expect a man to pay for me, as he would have done years ago as I believe in equal opportunities and rights. So there is no reason why a man should pay anymore? Except tradition which we need to break?
Also, many women refuse to propose to a man?! As it is not traditional or whatever, yet they want equal rights. Shouldn't they do it too, if they want equal rights?
Yes it is having your cake and eating it. I am a total feminist and want equal rights. I think men are no better than women and we deserve the same pay etc etc.
However, that is being a hypocrite if you turn around and say "its the mans job to pay". Well, if its his job to propose and pay then those women can stay at home and darn socks!

Not all women think this way. This is an old-fashioned, traditional belief that you guys should pay out of chivalry. Because you're a man. And because we want to make you shell out a little change before we give it up. ;) Yep, that's right ... all women are hookers.
All kidding aside, I think that whoever asks for the date should pay ... but that means if you are going to ask a girl out, be prepared to pay for it.
Also, you know this question has no actual basis in reality, right? Equal rights has to do with what we are constitutionally guaranteed by being American citizens per the Constitution of the United States. Paying for dinner or drinks is a social issue that has nothing to do with the amendment that alot of ladies worked very hard for.

As an Englishman (and Gay by the way) I would have to say that it is purely because women are the precious creatures that gave life to us all.
Not matter how equal or unequal their rights are, never forget that you issued forth from a Woman's Womb, without the nurture and care of the Woman, you would not be here to ask idiotic questions about why men should behave in a manner befitting a gentleman.
Custom and propriety dictate that you as a gentleman, should hold open the door, assist a lady to her seat and ensure that the ladies are ALWAYS served first and with the best of everything because never forget, without the woman, you would not exist, they are precious and physically more fragile (on average - not in all cases) than men, and remember that much as in the animal kingdom, the female must be courted to romance, she must be wooed and made to feel loved, remember that women ultimately will provide the heir to your name, respect that if nothing else!

It's still a custom for a man to pay for the date. However even as a woman, I agree with you. Also, if I had asked you out I would pay. Just like if you had asked me out I think you should pay. If its mutual than you each pay for yourselves. This is how I do thing because I agree with the double standard.

That's crap, men invite women out to dinner and expect her to pay for her half when it wasn't her idea to go out in the first place and the man knows she is skint. Since when do men have to pay for all the drinks? Maybe if you went out with some nicer women you wouldn't have this problem. Any man I've been out with expected to have an equal amount of drinks bought for him, even when he bought me drinks I hadn't asked for, and still expected a ******** within hours of meeting him in return for buying me drinks.
Not that you can't afford it anyway because you get paid more. Tossers.

Either you have gotten hooked up with many high maintenance chicks who demand you give them everything they want, or you are a lonely virgin who has never even been on a date.
If you knew ANYTHING, you would know that women do NOT have equal rights as men, and using that as a reason for you to be lazy enough to not want to pay for dinner is cheap and ridiculous.

Women only want equal rights when it suits them. When me and the enemy go out for the night I ALWAYS make sure she pays her way. She earns more money than me anyway so she should be taking me out on the lash at least once a week!

That's not equal rights, that's just a custom of society. The male pays. Well, until you've been together for 6 months. Then you both go broke! Heh.

Not all women are like that! Hey, I'm not going to complain if my date insists on paying, but I refuse to take advantage of the situation. If we go out to the movies and he buys the tickets, I buy the food.
