It's not necessaraly that Asian kids always go to medicine, just that a higher proprtion of them go into medicine than white kids so if you look at med schools they are always well over represented.
The reason that a lot of asian kids go towards medicine is a lot to do with the culture in which they grow up. It is a big hing to be successfull in asian culture and to be the best, and medicine is traditionally viewed as a succesfull profession to go into. The same is true for law, and to some extent dentistry.

I know a lot of people who are asian but have been forced into it by their parents, though that is by no means saying that all kids are like that. But I do get the impression that a whole lot more kids from asian backgrounds have pressure on them than other kids.
Oddly enough tho, black kids are underrepresented in med schools, and that might also be to do with the culture.

I am generalizing here, but Asians tend to gravitate toward money, prestige, and security. Medicine, while not the most lucrative profession is usually secure and is still regarded as a prestigious vocation. Many Asians go into medicine because (again I am generalizing) they tend to do well in school and are therefore well equipped to gain entrance into medical school.

I would like some statistics to back up that assumption...
As other answers have implied, I think that's just a matter of subconscious stereotyping. You may already believe that this is true, so you see what you expect - i.e., when you see a doctor of Asian origins, you think, "See? I'm right!" But, when you see an Asian artist (or chef or teacher or actress), you don't really register that the person is NOT a doctor, so you don't think, "Hmm, I guess medicine is not the primary choice of people of Asian heritage."

Parental pressure; Asian parents tend to perceive a career in Medicine as the utmost career, plus, there's the monetary side of things too.

Not all Asians go to medicine, but some of them do because they're really smart and for the money. I have an Asian friend and he's a chef.

In my personal opinion, Asians are into self healing as far as herbs and other remedies that were passed from generations down. I think they feel; that they can add something more in the medical field. Maybe even come up with a cure for some of these terminal diseases.

probably becoz its a profession which offers financial security, job security and is a profession which holds high respect from other people. Sadly its these reasons especially the latter which are given to and even pressured by some, (for want of a better word) 'old-fashioned' parents to their children.
howver you can see nowadays that more and more asian students are exploring other career paths which are more suited to the individual and aren't dealing with any pressure from family and friends.

There is more scope for the profession in Asian countries.Unhygenic life conditions, epidemics are common there. Many of the diseases readicated like TB,small pox etc are still prevailing in Asia.Patient/doctor ratio indicate more scope for practice and making money.Further Asian doctors and nurses are demand in USA,UK,Maldives,Australia etc as they are available at lower pay scales.Medical degrees open a world to the doctors, rather than other fields of study.
