To quote a pretty good cyclist: It's not about the bike. Ultimately, you will do well when choosing almost any model produced by either manufacturer. It is more important that you find a respected bike dealer in your area and get fitted for a bike for the kind of riding you plan on doing.

Trek Vs Specialized

Depending on what hardrock model you go with (like someone else said in the answers) both companies have a very similar quality build and have very similar warranties on their bikes. The choice should come down to which dealer makes you most comfortable, gives you the best deal, and what bike fits and feels the best. Make sure you take the time to get fitted to both and take them out for a test spin. If you are going to do any off road riding, I would suggest upgrading to a Gary Fisher collection by Trek Wahoo, a Trek 4300, Giant Revel 1 or 0, or the Specialized Hardrock disc, Hardrock Sport disc, or the Rockhopper. They have more durable wheels then the 3900 and should hold up better than the 3900 in more abusive riding. The general rule of thumb for taking a mountain bike off road is to spend $500 if you have rim brakes, $600 with disc brakes or more. Then you get stuff that will hold up, and won't need constant maintenance or replacement. Good luck and happy trails!

RE:
What bikes are better Specialized or Trek?

That's a big question. Depends on what you'd like to do with them. Assuming you have comparable models from each marketer, quality wise, I would say they are equal.

My "tipper" is that because pound per pound (this is just my estimation), Trek bikes, in general are more expensive than Specialized bikes. In addition, I don't like Trek's road bike Bontrager components that usually come standard with all Trek frames.

So, ultimately, I like Specialized better.

The best bike is the one that fits. Both of the brands you mentioned are very good. It's not too difficult to compare frame material and components to see which is a better value. If you're lucky, you'll have some good bike stores near you that sell both brands. Take them both out for test rides. The geometry for each bike may be a little different, and depending on your body type, one will feel better than the other. It's not worth spending a lot of money on a "Cool" bike that doesn't fit well. Consider other Brands as well - Felt makes a good bike that compares to the other 2.

I think Specialized has the better mountain bike designs, whether its full-suspension or hardtail.

Trek's carbon bikes are well-regarded and have been proven at the Tour de France. Specialized also has its bikes under a lot of Euro pros like the Gerolsteiner team.

You need to try both. One may suit your style better than the other. Also, emphasize the fit of the bike.

For every price range (plus or minus a few dollars), most companies will have an offering. For the most part, all of the offerings will be spec'd out pretty close (same level of components but maybe a different fork). The idea is to see where you get the most bang for your buck. I haven't priced Treks lately, but I think the Specialized will be a tad cheaper on the pocketbook for about the same amount of bike.

if i had to choose a bike for myself and had to choose between the two. i would choose specialized. to me trek is an inferior brand and i think it has kind of sunk down along with wallmart bikes. however trek does make some good higher end bikes.
