Many of the answers so far seem pretty good, it is very difficult to pin point the exact species by a description only, but check out these following pages. I use them all the time in my research when I need to cross reference a find with a described species. I hope that helps, I am more of beetle expert, and this is the best I can do, Good Luck!

Sounds like it could be a cicada killer wasp. They're *gigantic* and look like a cross between hornets and bumblebees, only bigger. They're 100% harmless as the males cannot sting (they have no stingers) and the females only sting cicadae. I would get a picture of them and compare them to cicada killers, there are plenty of websites on them. If it's not a cicada killer, then I have no idea. But that really is what it sounds like.

Go to the Yahoo photo search function and type in "hummingbird moth". Take a look at the pics and see if they look familiar.
