Here are some suggestions:

1) The Annex: Bloor & Spadina to Bathurst
This is close to U of T, therefore caters to students. Lots of cheap places to eat, a supermarket and small grocery stores. Close to two subway lines and the Spadina streetcar which will take you right downtown.

2) Little Italy: College & Ossington
Voted by Utne Reader as the "coolest" neighbourhood in North America a few years ago. The young hipsters hang out here. Get gelato or pizza. Hang out at trendy restaurants and bars. There's also a supermarket. Take the College St. car downtown or to the subway line.

3) Queen West (Queen St., west of Spadina towards Bathurst)
This area is gentrifying fast, so it's getting pricier. Lots of restaurants, bars and you can go to Kensington Market to get groceries.

4) Yonge & Eglinton (also known as Young & Eligible)
Lots of apartments, right on the Yonge subway line. One major supermarket.. This is away from downtown, but you can easily hop on the subway to get there. It's more suited for wanna-be yuppies or sports jock types.

Queen Street--it's practically the social epicenter of TO. Lots of young, vibrant people and close to shops, subways, and lots of activity. Good luck with your move!

Is it Toronto you're moving to? If so, it's disgustingly expensive to live there, parking is horrible, the closer you get to downtown, the more expensive it is.
