When you expel gas in 'open air' the gas tends to disperese quickly as gas will find a homogenous state in another gas.

When you expel gas in water, it will rise to the surface before it has a chance to disperse. Therefore you get a higher concentration initially.

i imagine this is from the humidity of the water, it thickens the smell. haha! I actually have youngsters to and that i talked about that. Or even as i'm contained in the bathe and my husband farts contained in the lavatory or something... it continually smells worse!

Looking for the "scientific" response.....I think because in the water, there's a bubble formed that concentrates the gas, whereas in the air, the smell is diffused more quickly.

(EDIT: Man, I really hate it when I'm "late" with my responses and they're the same as others' answers.....)

I think it is because it is contained in a bubble in the water and bursts directly in front of you. Whereas, in the air it tends to spread almost immediately.

prolly has somethin to with the fart traveling up as a bubble then comming to air ...with regular fart theres more chance for the fart to linger in the air before you smell it

What the heck?! maybe it just happened to smell really bad when he farted in the water. Maybe he had something to eat that day that made it smelly.

concentration:

The "bubble" causes a larger consent ration of gas to be presented to your nose.

IN a room... it's dispersed much more quickly... and... pardon my candor... but directed aft of you..... rather then bubbling up, towards your face.
