They can are beneficial because they aerate the soil, eliminate some other insects and may accidently pollinate some flowers.
I would think they'd better be O.K. because how would you eliminate them?

Well that 's their natural environment but if they are fire ants with fire ant hills all around, then you will have a problem, especially if you have young kids around..

um.. seeing that it's soil and all YES. unless if they are eating EVERYTHING (which i doubt) it's good to have some bugs and worms and ants in your garden....
