Oh, 50%?

most who have seen combat can describe in detail what happens when a.50 cal round does to a human head and or group of people and or the reactions of the human when wounded. Most who have been in the hot zones dont want to go back. Most that claimed and try to sound tough are lying. Myself served with the 82nd. and now with the 173rd. just completed my third tour a few months ago. I got no problem going back to the sand box i find it easier to live there less to worry about . But the soldiers with families and or have some sort of loved ones would much rather stay behind. Being single with no attachments tend to be in the same boat as me.

That's actually a good and fair question.

But you can usually tell the honest, sincere replies (not all Vets support this war, by the way) by how they reply.

Many will mention their service, their outfit, some their rank, and most will proudly brag about being a Grunt or Jarhead or Flyboy.

If I were to mention being in CID, stationed at Long Bien, then Camp Holliway, chances are I would be the real deal.

Most of them are probably telling the truth. When you think the Marine Corps is 170,000 strong, and the Army has more than that... that's a pretty good chunk of the population. And those are just the men and women who are currently enlisted. Add to all of those who have been previously enlisted and gone to Iraq and you have a ton of people who have gone to Iraq and other parts of the Middle East during this war. Many of them more than once.

well...personally i served as a marine(cpl) in vietnam for 25 months and i was a 2531 (field radio operator) and I saw combat. I really don't care if anyone believes it or not...this is the internet...I could be colin powel if i wanted to lie.

and I do support our troops and their accomplishments, and want to see them continue to get the job done.

qbqbqb I don't know where you heard 17% but that's not true. Not unless you are counting all support personnel too in all branches of service. The total number of Army and Marine grunts to serve in nam had to be greater than 17% of the total who served...plus you've got support personnel who were in combat like artillery, engineers, air crews, etc

The common number even in Vietnam was 17% of all soldiers actually see frontline combat. I personally have never seen it myself and out of my father and his two brothers one had seen any combat in which his youngest was a gunship pilot over the Ia Drang Valley Nov 14-17,1965. Look it up the movie was made called We Were Soldiers

I think that many have served, but few have actually seen combat.
Maybe they really wanted to do the combat stuff, but weren't able.
I am proud to say that I served, Navy. I served on these types of ships: LKA, AFS,FFG, and AD. Also did recruiting duty and reserves. Served during war time and several campaigns.

Probably a lot higher than the anti-war protesters who say they have been in combat.

It depends. People who simply say 'I was there' are probably telling the truth. People who claim to have been some sort of special forces are more often than not - BS-ing you.

The thing is that you have to be a veteran yourself to be able to tell if what somebody is saying 'sounds right.'

Look at it this way, it is said that out of 3000 tough guys that say there were Navy Seals, the number who really were equals one! You answer in a nutshell.
