I NEVER leave my animals in the car unattended. Period. This story came from Utah, so I can only imagine how hot that car may have been. There is no excuse for leaving a pet in the car .. it's the same as leaving a child in the car. Both are defenseless against the heat.
The heat inside a car can rise 20 degrees in a matter of minutes. Leaving a window down will help a little, but not much.
I really don't care what the circumstance is .. they shouldn't be left alone. That's just my two cents.

Of course. If it is a cool night or spring day, then the car doesn't get hot. The dog would be fine.
If we have to pick something up after the dog park and Cassidy is with us we don't think twice. If it is a warm day or the sun is out then we lock her in with the air on. We use our remote to get back in. We always try to be quick but she certainly doesn't mind.
For all those saying you shouldn't leave your dog in the car because you wouldn't leave a small child. C'mon- do you leave your dog in the house alone? would you leave your two year old in the house alone?
You shouldn't leave a dog in a hot car for the same reasons. But the comparison leaves something to be desired, don't you think?

Cars can get very hot quickly, you'd think people would know better than to leave animals in one when its hot.
AC also 'rescues' dogs left in not hot cars. I have seen and heard of 'rescues' when the temperature is 60 degrees.
My dogs love to run to the store with me but I am always nervous about it, hate to have my dogs 'rescued' from my car for no good reason except because AC wants to.

Yes, they do.
Dogs should never, ever be left alone in a hot car, or with any kind of bad weather condition. But, being comepletely realistic here, I do trust my dog alone in the car with an open window while I run into the store for a few minutes. If you have a dog that you don't trust alone, or tends to get in trouble, then its probably best to not leave it alone.

It can get very hot in a car even if it is not hot out. The car will build up heat. No child or dog should be left in a car alone. I live in Nevada and its against the law anytime

My dog goes every where with me and i leave the windows down for him. Now when it is really hot outside i will leave him at home. Riding in the car is favorite thing to do. I don't think it is a bad idea you just need to use common sense if it is to hot for you to sit in the car it is to hot for a dog to sit in the car.

Dogs can die from being overheated in the car. Animal Control can take the animal from you and charge you with animal abuse...just as if you were to leave your child in a hot car.
It's not safe...if it's hot, leave your dog at home. The greenhouse effect inside the glass of the car can raise the temperatures to extremes.

Even on cool days, a dog/cat/child can get very hot in a car. There is NO reason to leave a living being alone in your car. Sure, crack a window, leave water.......... better yet, take them with you. If you can't take them in the building with you, why did you bring them in the car? Plan trips with your pets that insure they are never left in the vehicle.

It's against the law to leave a child in the car. I think it should be the same punishment for people who leave their dogs in the car. I can't even count the number of times I have had to medically cool down a pup that was a victim of heat stroke, or warm due to hypothermia. Leave your dog at home if you can't bring him with you everywhere you go!

No animal should be left inside of a car without the owner, too many things could happen. The animal could even wrap itself around a seatbelt
