Most any dog loves to play- that is one of the qualities they look for in police dogs- a dog that doesn't play is no good to them...

Playful is not a quality you need to be aware of-- look at the needs of the breed and if you can fill those needs, tolerate their temprament.

In general...

Working breeds- shepherds, hauling types, terriers, etc. are very high energy. They need a LOT of exercize.

Shepherds are pretty smart- keep them buzy learning new tricks, or give them a job to do- watch the kids, etc. or they will get bored and destructive.

Lap dogs- Shi-tsu, Lasa Apso, pomeranians, Pekenese, etc are lower-energy. They don't need quite so much exercize- better for an older person, or less active type, but they still love to play.

If you have kids- you need a gentle dog with a mellow persoality and high pain tolerance- Labs are great for this type of situation... although you may have to wait till the dog is 5 yrs old before the "mellow" part comes out.

Think about your lifestyle- your activity level, your commitment level, and your imagination (especially important for those smart Border Collies!!)... then pick a breed. Any dog will play. It's up to you to find a game he likes.

Dogs aren't always particularly aware of their surroundings, so think about your home, too- you don't want a "bull in a china shop" effect...

My two mutts love anything running- they'll chase and wrestle each other. The lab mix loves fetch. The other (have no idea what she is) loves "jump on mommy"....

Yes, most dogs are playful. There are exceptions. I have a Boston and he is playful. Loves to get us riled up too. And two Bostons together is a riot. They always tease each other and chase and play tug of war. And the great thing about Bostons, besides their very high intelligence (except for backyard breeders who have destroyed a good blood line, rrrr) they can be 14 years old and still want to play.

Every dog is playful! Dogs love to play, that's one of the many ways they communicate! No need to spend money on a particular breed...try your local shelters and animal control first!

Get a yellow lab. They're very playful, and when you're in trouble, they'll protect you

I suggest a JackRat, jack russell and rat terrier. They are playful and crazy, but loving too.

Get a papillon. They're fairly small but they're so playful and affectionate, not to mention easy to train.
