The bloat was probably caused by a complication of cancer (stomach?) or the pneumonia made breathing difficult, causing him to inhale large gulps of air, which can cause bloat. I am very very sorry for you and the loss of your dog. I know how devastating it can be. Best to you-Time will heal.

Unfortunately, dogs develop cancer just like humans. There can be any number of causes for the cancer including environmental, genetics, but one of the most preventable forms of cancer are those caused by feeding a poor quality food. Far too many people do not yet understand that a proper diet is such a key element of healthy pets.
So many companies put so much money in to marketing their food as the "best" or the most "nutritious" that people do not take the time to do their own research. Companines like Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, and even those over priced vet foods like Science Diet still use by-products and cancer causing chemical preservatives like BHA/BHT. You have to ask your self why vets self foods with carcinogenic preservatives in them? It is disgraceful.
Even foods that do not have by-products or chemical preservatives can still be a low grade. Corn and Pork are two products that are widely used a cheap fillers in foods. Neither product is digested by dogs but count towards the protein and carbs in a food. So even if the food is "nutritionally balanced" it doesn't mean that your pet is getting the required nutrients it needs.
I am not suggesting that you fed a low grade food but it wouldn't surprise me as the companies do such a wonderful job of marketing their foods as healthy. I would suggest looking into foods like Innova, Wellness, Evolve, and Canidae if you get another dog. These foods are made with fresh, whole meat, vegetables, fruit and grains, all of which are pesticide free, are human quality and provide your dog with optimal nutrition.
I'm so sorry about you dog. I hope that you and others will help spread the word that prevention is key and that food is the one area where pet owners can have the greatest influence. People complain about the high price of these human grade foods but when you look at the potential vet bills if you don't take care of your pet's health...is it really that expensive???

The cancer and the bloat are 2 completely different things. Bloat can be prevented, cancer generally cannot - in dogs it is just one of those things that can happen. I have worked with Basset hounds for many years and even one of mine had to have his stomach tacked in order to prevent his bloat from turning into torsion where his stomach twists over and blocks air - that is what I suspect happened to your dog. The cancer and pneumonia are just secondary to the bloat. Bloat can be prevented by raising dishes off the ground, don't allow your dog to eat or drink large amounts immediately after or prior to exercise, encourage belching (fun parlor trick to teach your dog to belch) and then in severe cases - have the dog's stomach tacked like I did.

I am sorry about your loss, it is hard to lose a loved pet.
Carcinogens are in every thing we eat, drink, and breathe. They are also in the crap people spray on the lawn to kill weeds and bugs. Spayed/neutered dogs have a 30% higher chance of getting bone cancer, the most prevalent cancer in dogs.
It is also possible he would have gotten cancer even if you avoided all these things.

I am so sorry for your loss...
There are so many carcinogens in our world, that dogs are subjected to all the contaminates that we are..
Cancer can be exacerbated by the dog having an impaired immune system, but there is really no way to tell what really caused the cancer..

One thing I have been hearing a lot of is cancer in pets as a result of their food content.. Specifically, a lot of the commercial dog foods use livers from factory farmed livestock like chicken and cow. These animals, because they are in a factory farm are pumped full of pesticides, antibiitics, growth hormones and the like... ALL of those toxins are then concntrated in the liver.
I feed my dog only the human food grade kibble products (Innova, Wellness, Nutro - to name a few..)

Cancer is very common in dogs. It can be genetic, from food, from vaccinations, from environmental pollutants. My condolences on your loss - I have been there.
