On the last day of school the children come home with their essays, poems, journal entries, and art work. I would love to save everything, but it is not practical

Get a paper box (not a box made of paper, but a box that paper comes in) and put their stuff in it. When it gets full, go through it, sort stuff out, throw away things that aren't as memorable or great as other things.

That should keep it manageable. If a paper box is more than you want to keep, get a smaller box.

Well i would say definatly save the journal entries because i still have mine from when i was in elementary school and i like reading what i used to think like. I would save the best essay so that they compare over the years there writing skills. Artwork...well that takes up a lot of space sometimes...and in twenty years will your child really want to look at the constuction paper with apple stamps and scribbles...and hope to get something out of it...hard to say. maybe just keep one or two of those unless your child is really interested or good at art.

save the poems and some of the art and journal entries, maybe a few essays. ask the child! save the end of year and end of first semester report cards in a manilla envelope.

Figure out what would be the best memories. Then set up a file box you can organize by year. That will be a very cool momento when your child is grown.
