hey pervey pirate, this is how i remenber it:
i had just come home with mom from the jamesway dept. store. i'd gotten new school cloths. school was starting before long. i was going to be in kindergarten. i couldn't tie my shoes so mom locked me in my bed room and told me i'd never get out of there till i had them tied; and tied right. i was in there till dark before i got them to look right enough to get out of there. after that she would help me out with it till i memorized it. and when she wouldn't i'd get granny to. poor little five year old stuie.

If parents stay away from velcro as much as possible and actually buy kids shoes that have laces, the child will eventually try to mimic what they see someone else doing for them every day. When they start trying, then that is the time to teach them. There's no magic age. But if the parents take the velcro way out because it DOES (I'll admit) make dressing easier for a child, it really doesn't teach them a skill they will need to know at some point in their lives.

Whenever the child is ready to learn, by showing an interest in it.
My neice started to learn around age 4, when she finally hand control of her hands well enough, and the patience to boot. Most children can tie their shoes by the end of Kindergarten.

About 4-6 years old. It really depends on if the parent thinks the child is ready or not.
