Do blackberries taste sour? How do you know if they are ripe?

They are ripe when they are a deep purple and a very plump and soft to the touch - that's around August on the West coast.

They taste very sweet - sweeter than blueberries but not as tangy as raspberries.

Blackberries are ripe when they are a very dark purple/black. They are slightly more sour than raspberries. Use them in the same type of recipes that call for raspberries or eat plain.

Trailing Blackberry....They are small and black when ripe. July-August. This plant has a long vine like growth, low but often climbing over stumps or other bushes. 3 leaflets. These are Common. Best berries in sunny locations.

Himalayan Blackberry
These berries are large and juicy, black when ripe. Late July-Sept. Plant large vines, often climbing over other plants, with stout thorns. leaves alternate in 3s- sometimes 5's. These are uncommon. Found in a few locations, several along road at entrance.

They are sour if not ripe. When ripe they are soft, black and juicy. Delicious.
