The reason why I am asking this question is because there is so many homeless people that need a new direction, a little hope, alot of love and support to better their life. I feel like we have all these old buildings, and places that are just sitting in our community and nothing is being done with them. Why not turn them into commuities for the homeless, give them a place to live, provide food, clothing, counseling, rehab. And in return for all the things they need we give them jobs within those buildings. For example they work to keep it going and it gives them a sense of independence. It get's them a job and a place to stay and eat but mostly it gets them support to change their life style.

Most of Oregon doesn't have empty housing, and the housing that is empty (on the western side)when left vacant rots and isn't livable. There are also a very large number of organizations that help the homeless. The smaller towns will go out of their way to provide permanent solutions to individual problems when they happen in their community. There is a lot of apathy if someone moves to the area and has selected to become homeless and this is where the organizations come in. Even more needs to be done however for those who haven't been made homeless - a lot of it in drug and obiesity tratment that prevents people for managing their own lives.

I think Oregon people should help their homeless, but if one state (like Louisiana recently) has too much of a problem, then they can turn to other states, private organizations like churches, or the fed.

I am happy that you pose the question but why not do something about it. Have you ever once volunteered? given up money? food/clothes? Do that and then ask the rest of the world what WE can do to help.

I was with you until you mentioned Oregon. In Washington, California, Idaho, Nevada, or British Columbia? Yeah, OK, I can see your point. But Oregon? Are you SURE?
